Pilar Herrera Land (b. 1996, Chicago, IL)

short + formal bio:
I am an artist based in Northern California, working primarily with watercolors, and currently a substitute teacher for the Oakland Unified School District. My meandering practice centers play, joy, and a dedication to movement and reinvention within built spaces. I received my BA from the University of California, Santa Barbara and have shown work in exhibitions in New York (NY), Santa Barbara (CA), and San Francisco (CA).

longer + different bio:
How I create is more important than what I create and I hope to strike a balance between spontaneity and deliberation in my process. Joy is central in my work too; if I’m sad or anxious, I don’t feel like drawing or painting (or dancing). I continue to be really interested in physical and invisible structures we (people, individually and collectively) create, because we believe in them for some reason or another. Generally, my paintings and drawings embody a playfulness and hope rooted in “what if _____?!” I love perspective drawing and masking tape, I love playing soccer, I feel beautiful after laughing really hard, I talk about my brothers a lot, I use color irresponsibly, I’m a substitute teacher in Oakland, CA, right now -- an aside: everyone in the world is connected, yes, duh, and the challenge (Seamus pointed out to me) is how one chooses to orient themselves given the fact of our human constellation -- and I care deeply about my practice of movement.
